Billy Summer

Billy Summer is a St. Petersburg, Florida songwriter and producer whose work blends power pop, psych rock, and Gulf Coast melancholy.

Raised in Tampa, Florida, he grew up roaming the music department at the University of South Florida, where his parents taught. His early years were filled with sitting on the pill as the noodling from the practice rooms spilled into the courtyard.

One night at a party, in   Bayshore mansion, kids of a university board member dropped the needle on a record. Heavy metal tore through the speakers and  everything changed. With a nudge from the dark arts, he dropped out of school and hit the highway with little more than bad instincts and deep obsessions with rock ’n’ roll and the lifestyle.

Cutting his teeth in the glam rock underworld, Summer’s early career included a turbulent relationship with Epic Records and a bass-wielding chapter in the volatile power-pop outfit Potato Gun. He became a fixture of the Tampa Bay indie rock renaissance, founding the critically acclaimed and charmingly chaotic The Semis, before dissolving to form Luxury Mane— the albums Back to the Beach and Gold Standard are essentials.

The current band is Florida—a dynamic, guitar-forward band defined by smokin harmony leads, moody lyrics, and baited hooks. Beyond the stage, his catalog is regularly licensed for film and television, with placements in Ted Lasso, The Affair, Search Party, Life & Beth, Broke, Harpoon, Chicago Fire, and lots more.

When not leading his own projects, Billy holds down stage right with Tampa Bay’s beloved soul juggernaut The Black Honkeys, performing over 100 shows a year. With this band, built on both musical excellence and lasting camaraderie, he’s helped bring hundreds of thousands of people together over the last 25 years through the connective force of live music.
